Angebote für die Naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät

The courses listed below are intended to help students of the natural sciences to develop their English language skills in a variety of scientific contexts.  The courses are divided into the same levels as the general English courses listed here.  The same placement test and registration process apply to those wishing to participate.

Level 2: Editing Scientific Papers in English (2SWS)

Course Description:

This course is aimed at students in the natural sciences.

  •  Activities:
    • varied reading-based editing work
    • editing students’ own writing
  • Aims:
    • improve students’ effectiveness in editing scientific documents in English
  • Skills: reading & writing
  • Assessment: two written tasks for submission during the teaching semester

Level 2: Holding scientific presentations (2SWS)

Course Description:

This course is aimed at students in the natural sciences.

  •  Activities:
    • presentation training and practice
    • written and oral feedback on student presentations
  • Aims:
    • increasing the effectiveness and accuracy of scientific presentations delivered in English
  •  Skills: speaking and presenting
  • Assessment: two assessed in-class presentations

 

Level 2: Reading and vocabulary for natural scientists

Course Description:

This course is aimed at students in the natural sciences.

  •  Activities:
    • varied reading-based vocabulary expansion work
    • train correct and effective application of newly learned vocabulary
  • Aims:
    • improve students’ scientific vocabulary range and train its precise use
  •  Skills: reading & writing
  • Assessment: two written tasks for submission during the teaching semester

 

Level 2: Vocabulary and usage in scientific writing (2SWS)

Course Description:

This course is aimed at students in the natural sciences.

  •  Activities:
    • varied reading-based and written work
    • feedback and correction of written work
  • Aims:
    • increase participants’ expressive range and accuracy in written scientific English
  •  Skills: reading & writing
  • Assessment: two assessed in-class written tasks

Level 3: Holding scientific presentations (2SWS)

Course Description:

This course is aimed at students in the natural sciences.

  •  Activities:
    • presentation training and practice
    • written and oral feedback on student presentations
  • Aims:

    • Discussing scientific topics using everyday English
  • Skills: speaking
  • Assessment: one formal oral presentation and one informal class discussion

Level 3: Writing scientific papers for natural scientists (2SWS)

Course Description:

This course is aimed at students in the natural sciences.

  • Topics covered include:
    • Writing review and research papers
    • Increasing scientific vocabulary
    • Preparing manuscripts for publication
  • Skills: writing
  • Assessment: one short review paper and one short research paper

Level 4: Writing and presenting scientific papers (2SWS)

Course Description:

This course is aimed at students in the natural sciences.

  • Topics covered include:
    • Writing review papers
    • Improving professional presentation skills
    • Polishing English skills to sound more native-like
    • Preparing manuscripts for publication
  • Skills: writing and speaking
  • Assessment: one review paper and one formal oral presentation

Level 4: Research Paper Manuscript Preparation for M.Sc. and Ph.D. Natural Scientists (2SWS)

Course Description:

This course is designed for master’s degree students and Ph.D. candidates who have publishable research data. By the end of the semester, students should have a completed research paper manuscript ready for submission to a scientific journal.

  • Topics covered include:
    • Writing research papers
    • Preparing manuscripts for publication
    • Submitting manuscripts for publication
  • Skills: writing
  • Assessment: one research paper

SQ Module for cell and molecular biology (4SWS)

Course Description:

This module is aimed at students in the cell and molecular biology master’s program.

  • Topics covered include:
    • Improving professional presentation skills
    • Answering questions using scientific terminology
    • Discussing scientific topics using everyday English
    • Writing a critical analysis of one published research paper
  • Skills: speaking and writing
  • Assessment: one formal oral presentation, one class discussion and one essay
